Iconic Cannes Fashion

From a beachside Jane Birkin to Madonna in daring Jean Paul Gaultier to Gucci Première-clad Salma Hayek, see our favorite moments from the glamorous Cannes Film Festival over the years.

Grace Kelly is looking shipshape in 1955.

Sophia Loren makes a starlet-worthy entrance in a strapless sweetheart gown, 1955.

A fresh-faced (not to mention brunette) Brigitte Bardot was the life of the party in 1956.

Elizabeth Taylor takes in the Croisette scene with her husband Mike Todd, 1957.

Jeanne Moreau sports an ultra-Mod white look in 1966.

Catherine Deneuve waves to the crowd in an elegant sequined column dress, 1966.

Snap happy: Serge Gainsbourg shoots Jane Birkin on the beach, 1969.

The festival gets a royal-style infusion in 1987, in the form of Princess Diana, clad in an ice-blue Catherine Walker gown.

Madonna spearheads the lingerie-as-outerwear trend in Jean Paul Gaultier, 1991.

Grunge power couple Kate Moss and Johnny Depp in 1997.

In 2003, Penelope Cruz opted for Gothic drama in a Dior Haute Couture gown and an ornate choker from the house.

Nicole Kidman chose a sexy Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent design in 2003.

Golden couple Jennifer Aniston (in Versace) and Brad Pitt share a laugh in 2004.

Clad in a flapper-style gown, Naomi Campbell arrives at The Assassination of Richard Nixon's 2004 premiere on the arms of Cuba Gooding, Jr. and director Luc Besson.

2008 jury member Natalie Portman had a rotating array of getups, from Lanvin to sporty shorts. The origami-inspired Givenchy creation she wore to the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala was the highlight.

In 2010, Cate Blanchett stunned in a dramatic Alexander McQueen gown. She was the first to wear the label on the red carpet after the designer's death.

Salma Hayek was the first to wear Gucci Première, the house’s first collection intended especially for the red carpet, in 2010.

While the gowns and dresses are truly fabulous and memorable, I'm really taken with Grace Kelly and Jane Birkin's classic looks! I can't think of many who could pull of that top the way that Jane does! Speaking of memorable, not many of us could forget Madonna's daring get-up....thank God those days are gone! Beautiful Princess Diana is a stunning vision in blue; Brad and Jennifer...I loved them together! Included in this feature was a picture of Brad and Angelina, which I purposely left out. I don't care for the way that the media constantly plays the two off each other, adding crass and unwarranted comments. I know they're no longer together, but I'm partial to the Brad and Jennifer coupling.
