Designer Spotlight: Dannijo

I was so excited to get some "behind the scenes" information on one of my favorite jewelry lines. I must say, these young ladies are certainly keeping things hot with their big, bold and unique creations!

COSTUME JEWELRY HAS BECOME as significant an accessory as shoes and handbags, and sisters Danielle and Jodie Snyder have stepped in to offer a fresh perspective with an exuberant, contemporary collection. Falling somewhere between Danielle’s bohemian, rock ’n’ roll aesthetic and Jodie’s classic style, each piece in the Dannijo collection packs a punch.

Like many little girls, Danielle and Jodie grew up playing dress up; unlike most girls, they turned the hobby into a full-blown obsession, borrowing their father’s medical tools to re-create their mother’s jewelry. After the buzz that surrounded their first capsule collection, designed for a nonprofit, the self-taught jewelers built a more comprehensive collection, which was picked up by Bergdorf Goodman. Since then, they have expanded Dannijo by drawing on their love of travel and other cultures. “We’re both very open as designers and appreciate how different cultures incorporate unique materials, textures and designs,” says Jodie.

The sisters’ worldy approach and youthful spirit create a look for a new generation. Appropriately, Danielle looks to pop culture for inspiration. “I’m always inspired by music-festival culture from bygone eras, like Woodstock, to present, like Coachella,” she muses. They also love vintage jewelry, incorporating various materials and colors in their designs. But the fall collection tells their own story, that of “an urban warrior meets world traveler, the story of two sisters set against a global backdrop.” Intermix, 64 Main St., Southampton; dannijo.com
