"Fashion Futuristic"

In a way it was only natural for United Nude and Iris van Herpen to team up. The former is definitely the most architectural footwear brand around; the latter often injects into her designs striking elements and motifs borrowed from architecture and has recently been working with Dutch firm Benthem Crouwel Architekten, developing a concept that will be unveiled at Amsterdam’s ARCAM in mid-July.

“I was introduced to Iris after I had admired her work,” explains United Nude Creative Director, architect Rem D Koolhaas. “I offered to make shoes for her, as I know that for fashion designers shoes always come as an afterthought and most fashion designers don’t have the resources to get it all done on time.” The results of this collaboration were first seen on the London Fashion Week runway where van Herpen showcased her futuristic Autumn/Winter 2010-11 collection. Entitled “Synesthesia” and inspired by the sensations felt in one part of the body when stimulus is applied to another part, the collection featured designs that altered the inner and outer dimensions of the body’s contours, developing new volumes, shapes and silhouettes, covering and uncovering at the same time the body in architecturally constructed three-dimensional armours that created optical illusions through intricate leather strips highlighted by metallic elements.

The matching shoes that accompanied the collection – black and ivory ankle boots characterised by smooth lines with a golden three-dimensional motif on the upper and on the heel – will soon be available in selected shops. The boots are 100% handmade with high quality Italian kid leather and will be released in a limited edition: there are will be only 240 available worldwide, 168 in black and 72 in ivory. “I think the result of our work together is that of a pure and successful collaboration as Iris’ identity and our expertise and craftsmanship are joined in this marvellous product,” Rem D Koolhaas commented.

This is not the first time United Nude collaborates with a fashion designer: a while back the brand developed a few designs with Antoine Peters, among them also the “Label Shoe”, a perfectly wearable pump integrating a conceptual message about the fashion industry’s excessive use of labels. Van Herpen is at present working on the costumes for a production of Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”, directed by highly esteemed Dutch choreographer Nanine Linning and premiering on 5th September at the Osnabrück Theater. Will this production that mixes opera and dance inspire United Nude a collection of avant-garde dance shoes? Who knows, but you can bet that, if it ever happens, it will be the first architectural dance footwear ever released.

Iris van Herpen’s ankle boots for United Nude will soon be available from exclusive retailers and United Nude concept stores in Amsterdam, New York, Shanghai and Vienna.

O.k., I get the concept, and actually find it appealing. While I don't like making comparisons, this collection brings the late Alexander McQueen to mind.

Jeanette

Jeanette will be invading Start Boutique's basement this month, transforming it into the latest version of his illustrious store Jeanette’s. Stock will be pulled from the Spring/Summer '10 collections, and will also include a selection of one-off pieces and vintage classics from an array of designers. The launch party last night saw entertainment from off-the-wall tranny-punk act, Lady Noise, who provided a true tribute to Jeanette’s panache and style. Neighbouring hot spot Callooh Callay kitted out START’s bar, contributing Plymouth Gin and Schweppe’s Tonic to the guests, who included Ben Grimes, Dominic Jones and Louise Gray. Jeanette’s is now proudly open in START’s basement, with his ‘n’ hers fitting rooms decorated by Louise Gray and James Long, and online (www.start-london.com). Stock includes current and vintage pieces from designers such as Jonathan Saunders, James Long, Nicholas Kirkwood, Louise Grey, Blaak and Roksana Illincic.

These eclectic pieces are quite appealing, as they do possess a vintage look. I'm particularly taken with the dress in picture one, what a perfect piece of work!

Men: Stolen Girlfriends Club

Founded by Dan Gosling, Marc Moore and Luke Harwood in New Zealand, Stolen Girlfriends Club was created as a meeting of 'surfers done good'. A gaggle of artists and sportsmen, the men decided to take on a fashion line, and with a growing local following, they've established themselves as fun loving brand for the likes of Juliette Lewis, Kate Bosworth and The Cobra Snake.

Dazed Digital: Why the name?
It was romantically idealistic. The fictional idea of a group/a gang that would rescue damsels in distress (girls in shitty relationships). Originally this was a theme for our art show (called stolen girlfriends club), and then it turned into a fashion label! All because people liked the show title, and we wanted to make clothes for ourselves.

DD: What designers if any inspire you or do you admire?
We have always been fans of Hedi Slimane (please start making clothes again!). We have a lot of admiration for Riccardo Tisci, Stefano Pilati, and really digging what Phillip Lim is doing at the moment too. Is that sexist to only be liking male designers? Maybe we can put in Phoebe Philo in there too, plus she's super hot too.

DD: What kind of person do you design for?
Art punks, fashion drunks and movie stars in shitbox cars.

DD: Why do you think you've become so popular with the celebs like Juliette Lewis and the like?
To be honest it was ages ago when Juliette came in to our office. Since then we have had absolutely no celebrities wearing our stuff, or no proof! There have been rumours of Kate Bosworth wearing one of fringe dresses, Beyonce Knowles buying our sequin bike pants & matching bra when she was in Australia, Daisy Lowe wearing our mesh singlet while riding a jetski with P Diddy in Monaco, Agyness Deyn wearing our mesh prowler dress to bed in New York... but like I say - all rumours. We really need photographic evidence.

DD: What was your current collection inspired by?
A nomadic biker gang of sherpa mountain climbers, with their kidnapped trophy girlfriends. Pretty simple really!

I love the name of this cool and casual, "with a touch of rugged" collection, and the story behind it. The biker look is evident, though the pieces appear functional and lend themselves to mixing a matching for a variety of looks.
