The Dos and Don'ts of Fall 2013 Fashion Trends?

The editors at Glamour Magazine share their take on fall's fashion trends.

DO invest in eye-catching outerwear.

Statement-making outerwear manifested itself in a bevy of ways this season (think bold furs, oversize parkas, and cool leathers).
DON'T be afraid to experiment with various colors, lengths, and textures.
DO consider the rest of your outfit when rocking these coats. Keep everything else simple.

DON'T forget a super-cute hat.

We saw cool caps at just about every show, including Kate Spade and Tracy Reese.
DO remember this motto: When in doubt, put a beanie on it!
DON'T forget the other types of hats you can wear this season. Fedoras, floppy knits, and even baseball caps are at your disposal.

DO embrace classic prints.

Sick of the floral and kaleidoscope prints from spring? Well, say hello to classic prints like houndstooth for fall.
DON'T shy away from this print for the office. Menswear fabrics lend a chic and professional touch to your outfits.
DO keep in mind that houndstooth goes with everything! As we once said, it's basically a neutral.

DON'T put away your leopard print just yet.

Yes, you read that correctly. One of fall 2013's hottest trends is already in your closet.
DO play with different colors of leopard this season. Classic brown and black will always be in style, so have a little bit of fun and choose a pink or red version instead.
DON'T overdo it. A little leopard can go a long way, so stick to one piece featuring the cat print.

DO pick up an emerald green piece.

Pantone chose the shade as its top color for 2013, so it's no wonder that it was spotted all over the fall 2013 runways.
DON'T ignore how cute emerald green can look when paired with other jewel tones, such as garnet, amethyst, and sapphire.
DO look for different ways to incorporate the shade into your wardrobe. A structured bag or high heels in this vibrant hue is like an exclamation point at the end of your ensemble.

DON'T shy away from layering.

Take a cue from BCBG and add interest to your fall outfit choices by piling on a few extra pieces.
DO mix textures with your pants, skirts, and tops. A sheer dress over leather pants allows you to layer without looking bulky.
DON'T go crazy with colors or patterns when layering pieces. An outfit with many components should look as streamlined as possible.

DO take a chance on winter white.

When the temperature's low, we all have a tendency to reach for dark colors, but why not grab a winter white piece instead?
DON'T think you can wear winter white only for a night out. A chic coat fits in at the office, and denim works for the weekend.
DO save your flouncy pieces for spring. Choose weather-appropriate staples such as chunky knits, jeans, and jackets that make sense in autumn.

DON'T bail on the peplum.

It's the trend that won't die, so hop on the bandwagon if you haven't already!
DO find the right peplum for you. Where it's placed on a dress, shirt, or skirt can determine just how good you look.
DON'T underestimate how flattering a peplum can be. It can help define your waist or add curves to a boyish figure.

DO rethink your leather pieces.

Leather can be sporty, edgy, or downright womanly depending on how it's styled.
DO go for a colored leather piece every once in a while. Style it as you would a regular knit.
DON'T try an all-leather outfit—unless you're into that whole biker-babe trend.

DO fall in line with military-inspired looks.

There was a strong military presence at fall 2013 Fashion Week, which means that khaki green is on its way to becoming a staple in your wardrobe.
DON'T avoid girly versions of the utilitarian trend. How about a tailored top or slim pants?
DO add accents like lace or brocade to amp up the luxe factor.

The Biggest Style Dos and Don'ts of 2009

1. Going pantless in public.
90% say it was a DON’T. Unless you’re Lady Gaga, the majority of glamour.com readers say, it’s one big, chilly no-no.

2. The year’s metallic dress trend
77% of glamour.com readers say it was a DO. (23% Say it was a DON’T.)

3. Dude DON’T: Jerks love tattoo tees!
Weird coincidence: This year the rudest dudes wore these loud shirts. We get it guys, you’re not shy!

4. Drew Barrymore’s kooky style—a total DO!
In a sea of same-hair, same-dress, same-style clones, she’s a wackadoo original. Love that.

5. Shimmery dresses: Love them!

The Vegas-style glitz was everywhere this year, and sequins were such a DO. Beyoncé looks so glam in hers.

6. Gaga getups
Gotta give the lady props for being the style risk-taker of the year—but DON’T try this at home, kids!

7. Nail polish-red jackets
Anne Hathaway, we DO heart your crisp, bright coat.

8. Blue dresses: DO get one!
Great color, great shape on Katherine Heigl.

9. Rockin’ DO of the year: Fancy leather
Suddenly it’s limo-worthy, like on Ashlee Simpson. Who needs a Harley?

10. Socks’n’sandals
You say it’s a DON’T. They were all over the runway (and even this magazine), but you voted them a no-no on glamour.com. As commenter stylefox wrote, this “defeats the whole purpose” of open-toed shoes.

11. Still mad for plaid
Checks are here to stay (and luckily they’re a DO). Cute shirt, Jen Garner.

12. Curve-a-thon: Ready, Set, DO!
When an eat-your-heart-out number is in order, a body-hugging mini does the job better than anything else. Just stay away from see-through fabric if you’re going short and clingy.

13. Wild nails
We’re loving the not-found-in-nature colors, but go short. (Claws are a DON’T—and how is the bathroom even possible?)
14. Fried hair—it’s forever a DON’T!
The things we do to our hair these days—extensions, extreme dye jobs, overironing, overstyling—whoa. No wonder it’s coming out so crispy. Conditioner, please!

15. Thigh-high boots
Over-the-knee boots can be cute, like on the girl at left. But unless they’re part of your sexy-vixen Halloween costume, showing too much skin pushes them into DON’T territory. Remember, boots don’t count as pants.

16. Leather: A mega DO trend
The tough-girl material looked great on celebs and non-celebs alike. (But leather leg warmers? That’s just crazy.)

17. Statement tights: A daring DO
We promise you don’t have to dress as all over bold to wear them. The newest colors can give even a simple outfit an instant 2010 upgrade.

18.Humongous headbands are a DON’T.
Maybe Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf can pull off a ginormous bow, but 61 percent of glamour.com readers think they’re over the top for the rest of us.

19. Raiding your boyfriend’s closet: Such a DO!
Equal-opportunity dressing: It’s the trend that had guys everywhere screaming, “Hey, where’s my shirt?”

20. Cardi over a dress: What a DO!
They’re a godsend year-round. Thanks for the idea, Mrs. O.

21.And the Don’t-est DON’T of all: The full-body unitard
But we DO respect her chutzpah!

O.k., I have to add some comments. I totally agree that the unitard (or catsuit in some circles) is NEVER A GOOD IDEA....NO MATTER HOW GREAT THE BODY. While some plaid pieces are great, I personally don't care for the shirts........I don't like that "lumberjack-ish'' look. Furthermore, I've seen some sock and sandal combinations that work, but it's usually on the runway, and my, my, my, the long, over-the-top curved nails are just plain ugly! Lastly, while Drew Barrymore is hot and cold with her style, I'm loving that black dress!

Michael Kors: Holiday DOS & DON'TS

1. ACCESSORIZE IN A BIG WAY:

DO: play with oversize jewelry. I can turn a simple work look into simply glam.

DON'T: wear all your oversize pieces together. You're not a Christmas tree, so don't decorate yourself like one.

2. SWITCH IT UP:

DO: Stretch your investments by finding a blouse with a hint of special that can go to work then out.

DON'T: Neglect to add glamorous touches for after-hours. Nothing kills a party like not changing out of your office clothes into a more fun look.

3. TAKE YOUR STRAPLESS DRESSES TO WORK:

DO: Know that one with a straight neckline is perfect under a cardigan.

DON'T: Bare your shoulders at the office....stay covered up!

4. REPEAT AFTER ME: SHOES CAN MAKE YOUR OUTFIT:

DO: Understand the power of footwear. Even a demure dress looks evening-ready when you switch into a megasexy heel.

DON'T: Pair that sexy shoe with super-short or super-tight at a work party.

5. OH, AND ABOUT THOSE SEXY STILETTOS.....:

DO: Break out an outrageously high style with bold straps and ornamentation.

DON'T forget: At the end of the day, your never-fail going-out add-ons are black shoes and black tights. Now go have fun!
