Celebrity Street Style: Ripping it Up

One of the most versatile staples on the planet, jeans take on many fashionable forms. The hottest property these days are the ripped, tattered, and torn sort. Many a celebrity and the like, are opting for that current star, the boyfriend jean. I personally have been wearing them for months now, as the skinny jeans have been neatly tucked away. I find the loose fit quite flattering, and the styling options endless, as seen here.

There are some styles that I like more than others. I don't care for those that you can tell were deliberately (contrived, as Glamour UK put it, in reference to one particular look) and strategically cut (especially about the thigh), some tend to border on tacky. I'm all for a DIY project, but some are a bit much. What I've found is that many fray and tear a bit more in the ripped areas after a few washings, which really lends to their worn look.

Poppy Delevinge and Ashley Tisdale are wearing two of my favorite looks.

How to keep your Paige ripped jeans look smart for the Upper East Side sidewalk? Just mix it up with a simple knit, fabulous sunglasses and chic pumps. A dog as adorable as Olivia's Mr. Butler won't go amiss, either.

Prior to her eyecatching turn at the CFDAs in New York, Rihanna was spotted on the streets of the Big Apple working this season's biggest jean trend, that of the ripped jean (Citizens of Humanity - no less), of course. Teamed with a chunky sleeveless knit and a statement gold necklace, this is a great look to replicate for a low-key lunch date in the city.
Cheryl Cole's clearly enjoying this hot new denim trend as much as us; just look how smiley she is in her gorgeous dusty back ripped knee jeans which she teamed with a crop top and that fringed Kate Moss for Topshop suede jacket.

No stranger to the ripped jeans trend, Kourtney (Kardashian) debuted this stonewash pair with proper shreds across the knee for added drama.
Want to get in on the ripped jeans trend? Make like Cameron Diaz and get yourself a pair of loose-fit ones with plenty of drama to them, like this pair by Paige.

There's ripped jeans and then there's really ripped jeans. Eliza Doolittle's shredded pair very much fall into the latter camp... Wear if you dare.
Note to self: ripped boyfriend jeans and a plain white tee will be the two staples of our wardrobe come spring. Thanks, Kendall Jenner.

Want to channel LA off-duty pro Gwen Stefani? Add glam sandals with a slouchy beanie and ripped jeans by Goldsign.

Gwen Stefani transforms her laidback ripped vest and jeans look with some killer accessories - including a brolly and a pair of pink hi-tops.
From the uber-messy plait and AllSaints Varsity jacket to her ladylike studded courts and cross necklace, there's a lot going on with Vanessa Hudgens' look but everything is pulled together nicely thanks to those easy-breezy ripped jeans.

Lea Michele-Hello lazy weekend styling: boyfriend cut ripped jeans and a really pretty oversized knit.

Our go-to street style queen, we're always crushing on Fearne Cotton's latest fashion combo. This ripped boyfriend jeans, floral cropped jacket and trainers outfit is our sort of style indeed.

Kim's not new to this whole ripped jeans thing though. Way back in 2011, the reality TV star wore these strategically distressed ones - although the very contrived rips feels a bit, well, contrived.
If you need to up the fashion ante on an off-duty ensemble, make like Caroline Flack and add a printed coat to your ripped skinnies. It's an easy, one-stop style win.

There's not many people who could work oversized ripped jeans, an oversized sporty bomber and a dog collar, but, of course, where mortals cannot, Rihanna can.
We love this stripes and ripped jeans outfit from Kourtney - this is a spring outfit look to steal, ASAP.

Rosie (Huntington-Whiteley) can’t do much wrong in our sartorial eyes so this loose-fit ensemble with a most excellent pair of distressed Citizens of Humanity boyfriend jeans is right up our style street.
Nikki Reed-Nikki's bright blue ripped jeans and khaki jacket combo are the ideal off-duty look for us at the weekend.

Ugh. Can we not go ONE DAY without ogling Fearne Cotton's off-duty wardrobe? The soft grey coat and ripped boyfriend jeans was a much copied look in the cooler months.
At a Jimmy Choo party in LA, Poppy Delevingne proved that ripped boyfriend jeans are 100% a smart and chic alternative to skinny styles and tailored trousers. Just team with an excellent jacket and a killer handbag and heels to take yours from day to night in a jiffy.

Trust Miranda Kerr to nail the ripped jeans trend with typical chutzpah; the tailored suit jacket complete with loose-fitting tee and sharp accessories is the grown-up way to wear these bad boys. Louis Vuitton arm candy - optional.
We’d like to borrow this look from Ashley Tisdale head-to-foot; everything from the (awesome) fake designer logo tee to the light-wash ripped boyfriend jeans, super-smart studded flats and denim jacket thrown across the waist, is spot-on.

Ripped boyfriend jeans don't have to mean opting for a slouchy style. Try a more figure-hugging pair like street style queen Rachel Bilson's for a sleeker silhouette.

Kendall Jenner went back to her Cali roots in this midriff baring ensemble with a most excellently shoulder robed letterman jacket and seriously distressed jeans that were basically a pair of shorts they were so darn ripped up. Gah. We love it.
Kourtney's slate grey ripped skinnies have just jumped to the top of our wish list. Follow her lead and wear them with strappy heels and a floaty blouse.

For a trip out and about in her native New York, Emma (Stone) went for a casual cool vibe in ripped jeans, a sharp coat and those studded Valentino heels. (Please can we have the whole outfit?)
Trust Olivia Palermo to have the whole ripped jeans thing down pat. Follow her lead and pair yours (they're by AG Adriano Goldschmied, in case you were wondering) with a jazzy top, embellished sunglasses and this grey printed blazer jacket by Reiss.
We are loving Rihanna's new pink 'do at the moment and as a result even the simplest of outfits (cue: Citizens of Humanity ripped jeans and a tee) look instantly super cool.
Kim and Kourtney took to the sunny streets of LA over Easter weekend, matching Starbucks juices in hand and sporting outfits that featured interesting cut-out detailing. Kim's denims aren't so much ripped as majorly holey making these an ideal option for the hot summer weather.
Monochrome separates are an easy way to style out ripped boyfriend jeans, as is a slick of the perennial Stefani staple - red lipstick.
