"To Strap or Not to Strap"

Dooney & Bourke
Coach

1. Dooney and Burke, $350; dooney.com
Herman says, “This one is equestrian chic. It reminds me of a saddle.”

2. Coach Cambridge leather crossbody, $198; coach.com
“The zipper pockets in front make looking for your subway card really easy,” Herman says.

3. Marni brown leather bag, $882; Marni, NY, (212) 343-2432
“I’m always carrying folders for work, and this one would hold them perfectly,” Piercy says. “And I like how it does have handles if you want to switch from the long straps.”

4. Anya Hindmarch Cross Body Bag, $545; Anya Hindmarch, Las Vegas, (702) 566-8900“This one has lots of pockets inside, which is great, since when you carry a smaller bag, you have to be more concise about where you put things,” Herman says.

5. A.P.C. purple heavy canvas sac, $200; apc.fr
“It’s no surprise it’s from A.P.C,” says Hayes. “It looks really Parisian. I love the color.”

6. J.Crew Campo messenger bag, $325; jcrew.com
“I’m obsessed with everything gray right now, because it gets me away from wearing too much black,” Piercy says. “Plus it has a flap, which makes it more secure.”

7. Céline shoulder bag, $3650; Bergdorf Goodman, NY, (212) 753-7300“The red reminds me of a Mondrian. It’s all about the clasp for me on this one,” says Herman.

Reasons for loving a long-strapped satchel: The crook of your arm remains delightfully unencumbered, your hands can be free of handles, and if you wear the bag across your body, messenger-style, your shoulders stay straight. “One of the best places for this kind of bag is at a concert,” says Vogue Fashion Writer Jane Herman, who just took her little YSL pouch to a Dodos show in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “You can clap, hold a drink, and easily keep an eye on your bag.” That last bit is important in crowded spaces, as Beauty Writer Catherine Piercy found one evening on the subway. “I looked down and saw a man’s hand in my bag,” says Piercy (not to worry, the pickpocket didn’t get away with anything! But one of this season’s long-strapped bags worn close to the body might have prevented the episode altogether).

Practicality aside, these bags have a chic, simple look. “It’s almost an Ali MacGraw feeling,” says Megan Hayes, Assistant Accessories Editor. She covets her mother’s vintage Dooney & Bourke satchels, and when it comes to her own bags, Hayes lengthens the straps on her Chanel pieces, so she can easily throw them over her shoulder. Another bonus? “These don’t necessarily have to be really expensive, because it’s more about the shape than the material.” Our editors pick their favorites that you can go out and buy now.

It doesn't matter to me if it is a cross body bag or messenger bag, I like both styles. I started carrying a crossbody back in the spring and have gotten so use to ease of being able to use my hands if needed. This is a group of great selections......the Dooney and Bourke is so....sleek. I also like the J. Crew, Coach, and Marni. I like the Idea of of a tote-type bag with long straps.....it's a good look.
