A Socialite's Idea for Keeping Warm
"The idea was launched when I was talking to my old friend from Miss Porter’s, Courtney Moss, on a cold March morning at New York’s Lasker Rink,” says Gigi Mortimer. “We were two hockey moms looking for something easy and warm that we could throw on in the morning and look great as we dashed out the door lugging hockey bags.” So Mortimer and Moss came up with Glamourpuss NYC, a line of rex-rabbit-fur mufflers ($198) and fox-fur mittens ($315) that will make their debut this holiday season. It’s the first time that Mortimer has designed in ten years, since she gave up a career creating accessories for Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang to raise her three sons. Until last spring, that is, when longtime friend Tory Burch called to ask her for help with the eyewear line she was launching with Luxottica. Burch had worked with Mortimer at Ralph Lauren and at Vera Wang, and she knew Mortimer was getting restless at home.
For Mortimer, “it was a wonderful opportunity to be creative again, and I started thinking about all the ideas that I have had over the years.” She loves to ski, skate, snowmobile, and even garden in the winter. “Basically, I spend my weekends outdoors, and I have been wanting an alternative for the turtleneck fur gaiter I live in while I’m in Sun Valley.” She joined forces with Moss, who had worked in PR for Yves Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani, and the duo set off to find the “best furrier we knew, who makes the Carolina Herrera furs.” One sample later, and they were in business, with the muff coming in ten colors. “We felt that in this crazy economy,” Mortimer says, “women will want an accessory that can punch up any outfit.”
