Top Blogger's Incomes Continue to Soar?
I ran across this piece on WWD, but it was locked. I continued to search, and found a synopsis of it on Jezebel. This is DEFINITELY NOT my reality, but an interesting read none the less.
In a piece titled "Incomes Keep Soaring for Fashion's Top Bloggers," the numbers are staggering.
While a fashion magazine structure relies on a bunch of hands to promote a garment or accessory — an editor, models, stylist, writer, etc. — the style bloggers are generally wearing the item themselves and writing about it themselves. And designers are finding that these "real" people move product.
The WWD article by Rachel Strugatz and David Yi — available by subscription only — claims that top style bloggers can now earn more than $1 million a year. Reminder: these are not engineers, or designers, or surgeons, or singers, or actors. They are STYLE BLOGGERS. "Now, $100,000 is not enough," Bryanboy's Bryan Grey-Yambao, 32, said. "For a young, upstart blogger, $100,000 may seem like a lot of money. [But] as a business, a legit business, $100,000 won't really bring you that far. You have a lot of expenses."
And:
[Bryanboy] passed on an offer from a mass brand to design three bags for $75,000. To date, the most he has received for an appearance was $40,000 to attend the ribbon cutting at the Siam Center in Bangkok last year.
And:
RewardStyle confirmed its top earners can make more than $80,000 a month solely on affiliate commissions $80k a MONTH. Just let it sink in.
AND:
Salt Lake City-based Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies is one of the top earners. While the 23-year-old blogger declined to comment on her annual income, based on RewardStyle's data, she could make at least $960,000 from affiliate programs alone this year. Other income is on top of that, such as partnerships with brands like TRESemmé or J. Crew. $960k — other income is on top of that.
And that's not all:
The duo behind Snob Essentials —Tina Craig and Kelly Cook — have been making a steady six-figure income since their second year of business, which launched in 2005 as Bag Snob. Today Craig and Cook's income is projected by industry sources to surpass the $1 million mark.
That's a lot of money.
The whole thing really blurs the line between editorial and advertising: For decades, fashion mags have been accused of eschewing objective journalism and featuring advertisers in lavish photoshoots; now there are instances of companies paying style bloggers to post about or pose wearing their clothes. WWD mentions Coty paying $1,000-$2000 for a post about Marc Jacobs's Daisy fragrance, and one blogger was paid $5,000 to publish a photo in which she's wearing wearing blue-and-white Rebecca Minkoff shorts.
Actual line from the piece:
"None of the top bloggers interviewed for this article say they adhere to a strict set of journalistic codes or ethics." Duh: Everyone knows ethics don't matter when you have a million in the bank and some Tom Ford sunglasses.

Inna Modja: A Mix of Fashion & Song
Songwriter and fashion blogger, her music is beloved for its mix of folk and sweet sounds
The first two words that come to mind when thinking of Inna Modja are music and fashion. Her Facebook photo is a drawing that depicts her Vogue cover, in a comic-style version, with the words: "Inna Modja loves Vogue Africa. Pairs Fashion 2010."
Profession and passion make up the original that this singer from Mali is known for -- she's also a songwriter and fashion blogger and her music is beloved for its mix of folk and sweet sounds, and her blog, Rock'n Love, addresses fashion, beauty and music.
Her first album, Everyday is a New World was released in October of 2009 and already her first video, Mr. H, showed all the characteristics of a Pop princess. Musically, she cites Salif Keita as her inspiration the world-famous musician with whom she collaborated before embarking on her career as a sololist.
Born in Mali, and before settling in Paris, she's lived in Nigeria, in the United States and Togo. In France, her cover version of the 1988 hit, "Life" by Des'ree is all over the airwaves, and Inna has become an icon of style. Fresh, eclectic and exotic, in both her style and music: Inna is both Rock and Love.

Stylish Fashion Bloggers
Featured are fashion bloggers, Jessie Norton, Samantha Smikle and Karen Blanchard. Jessie's blog, My Delusional Mind, is beautifully done and is comprised of pictures of her wearing various looks........her vision is that of a beautiful model. Samantha Smikle's blog is O.M.O. Writes, which is also beautifully done boasts an "edgy vibe." Unfortunately, there wasn't anything in the article regarding Karen Blanchard's blog......I tried a search by her name and didn't come up with anything. It's always interesting reading about fellow bloggers!

Some of the Most Stylish Women in Cyberspace
Following fashion in the magazines is all well and good, but nowadays the first (and last) word in style found on your handheld or laptop. Ten bloggers worth bookmarking.
1. Nadia Sarwar-FROUFROUU: Sarwar, who is based in the Midlands in the U.K., posts ethereal shots of herself posing in the English countryside wearing outfits like a trench coat, cropped trousers, a fur pillbox hat and ankle boots. It's easy at first glance to think that Sarwar's outfits have been purchased directly from a designer runway. Her posts reveal however, that most of her clothes are from vintage stores, eBay or H&M.
2. ATLANTIS HOME: Former model Judy Aldridge began blogging with her daughter Jane several years ago. Jane (of Sea of Shoes) has received a considerable amount of attention and now designs a line of shoes for Urban Outfitters. Judy, a mother of two, has developed her own following, thanks to her ability to discover vintage treasures and for making looking fabulous in your 40s seem effortless.
3. THE CHERRY BLOSSOM GIRL: Alix Bancourt is a fashion school grad, fashion designer and resident of Paris. Is it really surprising that she is basically a fashion fantasy come to life? Head to her blog to admire photos of Bancourt in romantic outfits taken in various Parisian locales. Try not to get jealous.
4. Lucrecia Chan-FASHION POISON:Reading Chan's blog is like getting a very intimate peak into her world (albeit a very fashionable one). Chan posts travel photos as well as the contents of her purse, and isn't afraid to tackle darker personal moments, like struggling with cancer and the death of her beloved dog. Along the way, see pictures of her sporting designer duds from Givenchy, Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs.
5. Karla Deras-KARLA'S CLOSET: Deras has an enviable sense of style. Wearing striped trousers, a perfectly crisp white shirt and Yves Saint Laurent pumps, she comments on her blog, "Anyway, have to go mail in a parking ticket." It's hard not to think, In that fabulous outfit? One reason to become a fan is to watch Deras' style as it evolves into a more ladylike and refined way of dressing. Maybe you'll be inspired to do the same.
6. GARANCE DORE: Photographer and illustrator Garance Doré, who is based in Paris, is one of the most well-known street style photobloggers. Doré shoots style icons like Dree Hemingway and Anna Dello Russo and humorously infuses her blog with some of life's personal style dilemmas--like hating to wear tights. Only adding to her Web icon status is her relationship with Scott Schuman of the Sartorialist, another street style blog.
7. Kristina Gisors-YOUR PRIVATE SHOPPER: It shouldn't be surprising to learn that Gisors, who is at the helm of Your Private Shopper, is a stylist. Consider her blog a tutorial on how to get Parisian chic as you follow her through London and Paris fashion weeks and styling for French pop singer Vitaa.
8. Gala Gonzalez- INSIDE AM-LUL'S CLOSET: Gonzalez has a high-low mantra to dressing, and it's all captured on her personal style blog. She mixes Zara and Balenciaga and highlights up-and-coming designers in her wardrobe like the Music Collection, as well. The best part about Gonzalez's blog is that readers actually get to see her having fun in her clothes--at parties, skipping through the streets of London and visiting New York City.

Susanna Lau-STYLE BUBBLE: While Lady Gaga has brought avant-garde fashion into the mainstream, Lau, or "Susie Bubble," is a pioneer of fashion experimentation with a loyal and vast online audience. Not many people can pull off wearing a neon Indian headdress, lingerie as outerwear and a head-to-toe fuchsia outfit--all the while making it looking chic. Lau's blog is a must-read, if only to admire her brazen outfits.

Diane Pernet-A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION: Longtime fashion journalist Pernet has one of the most influential style blogs on the Internet, thanks to her comprehensive coverage of designers and fashion happenings from around the globe. Pernet has morphed into a bona fide fashion icon along the way, with her uniform of cateye sunglasses, pompadour hairdo,
veil and platform wedges (all in black).

Stylish indeed! I'm familiar with a couple of the ladies' blogs, but will certainly peruse the others.......I love reading about interesting people and places.
