The Unique Creatures

Still from Qui ĂȘtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?

Today’s myriad of style blogs has created an army of Internet stars out of editors and ordinary people, leaving genuine fashion icons (translation: individuals known for some artistic or political achievement which give their covetable getups a hefty jolt of gravitas) pretty much forgotten. But theuniquecreatures.com, an online magazine–slash–shopping site dedicated to style rebels with their own distinctive causes—Angela Davis, Frida Kahlo, and Lee Miller among them—aims to set that motion in reverse.

“It’s a celebration of the independent thinkers of the world,” says Howard Collinge, creative director of the Sunshine Mind Collective advertising agency who, along with friends and creative directors Zahara Gallardo and Lucia Martinez, founded the site as a side project earlier this year. “After all,” Collinge continues, “independent thinking leads to independent style choices.”

For instance, the site suggests Burberry Prorsum’s transparent cape, Prada’s minimal baroque sunglasses, and Edie Parker’s glow-in-the-dark clutch for an autonomous look rooted in the namesake heroine from William Klein’s film Qui ĂȘtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? Similarly, all manner of spotted wonders—from a Marc Jacobs black-and-white polka-dot sweater to Equipment’s double-dot blouse—allude to the hallucinatory work of Japanese pop artist Yayoi Kusama, while falling in step with fall’s bespeckled trend. But the intention here is never to veer into over-the-top make-believe, much less disguise. Says Collinge: “Everything is grounded in a modern-day context. We tend to choose pieces that are stylish and unusual, but also completely accessible.”

A new and improved version of theuniquecreatures.com launches on November 19.

I checked out this blog/site, and was instantly inspired by the varied content, and depiction of some famous personalities. Their 'mantra,' "a celebration of the independent thinkers of the world," certainly strikes a chord, as it's the unique and diverse which "shakes us loose" from the usual fare.

Men: "Street Etiquette"

Street Etiquette is a male-focused blog written by the two very stylish men pictured. Beautifully written, informative and the "go to place" for some of the lastest men's fashions and more. Read more about this dapper duo below.

Joshua Kiss and Travis Gumbs are single handedly changing the perception of male urban fashion

Meet Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs, two dapper gentlemen from Harlem who are single handedly changing the perception of male urban fashion. On their immensely popular blog, Street Etiquette, the two get dressed in anything from crisp button downs with thin striped ties and khakis to leather jackets, cuffed jeans, and sock revealing saddle shoes, clearly and vividly photographing each stylish concept for their eager readers.

Aesthetic architects, the two make each outfit more appealing by offering close glimpses of embellished details - recent posts showcased bright orange embroideries on a maroon jacket, toggle buttons on a navy blue stand collar coat, and tassles on a pair of well polished deep amber penny loafers. Though in their twenties, Kissi and Gumbs seem to have old souls, and constantly reference erstwhile pictures to inform their current chic. They say, "Our Street Etiquette is…our love for incorporating different styles of fashion into our urban understanding."
