Knitwear: Stine Ladefoged

With bold silhouettes and dramatic detailing, former Danish Design School student Stine Ladefoged’s graduate collection “Narcissism is calling” appeals to the egotist in us all. Drawing on postmodern architecture and inspired by the individual who yearns to be the centre of attention, Ladefoged’s structured knitwear, encourages us to appreciate her technique and the craft of knitting. With knots and tubes, forming architectural shapes, Ladefoged’s collection is perfectly sculptured to portray her concept, further illustrating the potential of knitwear as wearable art.

Dazed Digital: How old are you?
Stine Ladefoged: I'm 29 years old.

DD: Where do you live?
Stine Ladefoged: In Copenhagen, Denmark.

DD: What was the concept behind your graduate collection?
Stine Ladefoged: It’s made with inspiration from postmodern influences.

DD: Can you remember when you first became interested in fashion?
Stine Ladefoged: When I was little, my mum was sewing a lot of my clothes herself, so she sometimes asked me to make decisions on colours and buttons etc. I think that’s where my interest in fashion began.

DD: How would you define your style?
Stine Ladefoged: My style is sculptural and detailed, but with Scandinavian simplicity so the focus is on the material, structure and silhouette.

DD: Why did you choose to specialise in knitwear?
Stine Ladefoged: Knitwear fascinates me because you can make your own material and shape the knit in three dimensional forms without sewing and cutting.

DD: Can you describe some of the techniques you used for the collection?
Stine Ladefoged: I’ve used techniques like short row knitting, jacquard, plating and rib.

DD: Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?
Stine Ladefoged: Hmm, I really like the off-white sweater with the snail details on the shoulders, but it is difficult to say because there are elements in them all I like.

DD: What inspires you as a designer?
Stine Ladefoged: I’m inspired by a lot of things, but architecture, buildings and bridges is often a part of my inspirations.

DD: Who are your favourite fashion designers?
Stine Ladefoged: I love Sandra Backlund, Alexander McQueen and Louise Goldin

DD: Are there any up-and-coming Danish designers whose work you admire?
Stine Ladefoged: There are a lot of great Danish designers, to name a few – Borcher, Wackerhaus and Louise Wahlgreen

DD: What are you working on at the moment?
Stine Ladefoged: At the moment I’m working on my next collection, which will be in stores this autumn.

DD: What are your plans for the future?
Stine Ladefoged: I want to continue working and keep improving my skills.

DD: Where can we view your work?
Stine Ladefoged: You can view my designs on www.stineladefoged.dk and on http://spotontextiles.wordpress.com/2009/07/10/stine-ladefoged/

Never have I seen the likes of such intricate, dramatic and Artisanal renderings. The gray dress or sweater, yellow dress, yellow sweater, and THAT green shrug are true perfection!
