Just like the It bag, the must-have shoe and the hero jacket, the statement necklace has, within two or three seasons, become a fully paid-up member of the “most wanted” fashion club.
It could be an extraordinary, Alhambra-inspired breastplate by Erickson Beamon, with a price tag of more than £700, or one of those twisted ropes of beads and jewels on an Alber Elbaz for Lanvin signature cocktail-dinner dress
But then again, it could just as easily come from Freedom at Topshop. Freedom is the ubiquitous British high-street jewellery brand that has taken the cost out of costume jewellery. It regularly unloads a pirate’s treasure trove of necklaces, bangles, rings and earrings on to the counters of more than 300 Topshop stores around the country (there are 300 new lines a month, more than 2,000 per season). A “Love” pendant that went into stores in the chain before Christmas for £6 clocked up more than 20,000 sales.
“Designers such as Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, Antonio Marras, Givenchy and Chanel, for example, were key for the boom in costume jewellery,” says Vivien Thomason, Freedom’s buying director. “They upped the ante two or three years ago when they began doing costume collections and 'hero’ pieces for several hundred pounds or more. And of course, we can do it for much less.”
Earrings are rarely more than £6 to £10; necklaces £18 to £20. But Freedom appeals as much to young celebrities as it does to the girl who counts her pennies. BeyoncĂ©, Olivia Palermo, Agyness Deyn, Joss Stone and the hip TV presenters Alexa Chung, Cat Deeley and Holly Willoughby are fans, as is Katy Perry.
Freedom, based in Billericay, was established in 1994 and became a leading UK brand through its exclusive association with Topshop. It has a 15-strong design team staffed by fashion graduates from schools as diverse as Central Saint Martins, the Royal College of Art, Northampton University, Leeds University and the Colchester Institute. Their input is bolstered with reports from scouts in fashion hot spots all over the world.
“Our groundwork is global,” says Thomason. “Trends can be inspired by whatever or whoever is in the news or out in the streets. We watch people like Lady Gaga and BeyoncĂ©. Movies are major. Sex and the City is always great for kicking off something everyone suddenly wants.
“Plus, we obviously take inspiration from the catwalk. Having said that, we are working two seasons ahead and then we tweak before it goes into store. We’ve just done autumn/winter 2010 and we’re already gathering ideas for 2011.” Any clues? “We’re starting to think neutral.”

I love it! My favorites are the yellows and the multistrand bead necklace in picture six.
